The platform was almost empty — that rare hour when the rush has passed but the maintenance glow still hums. I stood beyond the yellow line, not because I feared the train but because the tile beneath me held a tree shadow so precise it looked printed. Wind had turned somewhere above the station, and the shadow shifted slowly, a sundial without ambition. Clementi MRT is familiar enough to be invisible; today it insisted on being seen.
I had no appointment on the other end. Sometimes I ride to ride, which is a luxury of living where the network is dense and the fares are sane enough not to calculate every trip like a ledger. A cleaner pushed a mop bucket past, wheels squeaking in a rhythm older than the station announcements. We nodded — the Singapore nod, minimal, sufficient.
When the train arrived, doors opened to a carriage with four people and one folded bicycle. I did not board. I wanted to keep the shadow, the quiet, the sense that the city could pause without asking permission. A personal blog note is often this: something small noticed at a bus stop or MRT platform, held up to the light like a leaf vein.
Above ground, the void deck air drifted in — warm, slightly sweet, carrying someone's laundry steam. I thought about Chin Swee only as a contrast: noise versus this hush, sirens versus squeaking wheels. Not to compare tragedies, only to honour how different hours feel in the same city. The shadow moved again; a bird crossed the opening, brief as an underline.
Eventually I tapped out, bought iced water from the machine, and walked home along Avenue 2. HDB blocks lined up with their usual geometry, yet the moss on the lower walls after rain made the geometry soft. I wrote half a sentence in my phone notes and deleted it — premature. The platform hour had not finished settling. Now it has, pressed here, a leaf for the shelf.
