The fold I made three chapters ago marks my return; I do not use ribbons because ribbons feel too ceremonial for a Tuesday.
Clementi outside is dark with punctuations: street lamps, phone screens on the walkway, the green exit sign above the stairwell. Rain earlier left the glass freckled; I did not wipe it. The freckles distort the lights into soft blooms, which matches the name I gave this blog without planning to — scribe, bloom — though I am not a service and this is not a product. It is a habit, like reading until the kettle cools.
Tonight's book is borrowed, returned tomorrow to a friend who lives nearer Sunset Way. Fiction, not advice — I have no interest in instructing strangers. The characters argue about small things seriously, which feels honest. I pause to listen to the piano student stumble, recover, stumble again. Progress sounds like that everywhere, not only in music.
When the reading lamp flickers once, I tap the base — superstition, perhaps, or the same instinct that makes you quiet when the block quietens. My phone stays face down. Messages can wait; they are not emergencies unless they become emergencies, and most do not. This is the evening habit I trust: window open a finger's width, lamp on, city allowed its soundtrack.
